A well-known Chinese poet and calligrapher from Hunan province and received asylum in Philadelphia, PA closely after he was exiled from China. He’s been living in NYC for 15+ years now.
A well-known calligrapher from China visited Genspace in the early summer and was drawn to a mycelium grown rectangle. He transferred his calligraphy onto the mycelium piece. The sample piece was only 6” x 6” x 1” but held up really well to the stamp and calligraphy art. Seeing how well the sample held up, he asked our community project group to fabricate a 4’ wide mycelium disk for him to use as a scroll for his next calligraphy piece that would then be filmed as part of a Sunset Park local artists documentary.
Early September, the artist will be filmed for a documentary of Sunset Park local artists that will be released in late 2024 to early 2025. There will be a tea ceremony at Sunset Park in which Huang Xiang will paint a calligraphy poem onto a 4’ mycelium disk made by the Genspace Biomaterials Studio. Afterwards, the mycelium disk will be delivered to a garden to naturally biodegrade and fertilize the garden soil. Link to Sunset Park Railroad.
Join us on September 6th at St. Michael’s Church for a unique art installation by Nobel-nominated poet and master calligrapher Huang Xiang, featuring live calligraphy on a biodegradable mycelium canvas. Witness the creation of 'Peace, Love, Unity' with music by Wendy Lee on the Guzheng, and be part of a moment celebrating art, culture, and environmental stewardship.
